My background is in finance and customer service. I worked for Hewlett Packard for nearly 6 years in Roseville before deciding to open A Tree of Life in 2007. Since then, Early Childhood Education has become my passion. I have been caring for children in my home school for over eleven years. During this time, I have come to understand that early childhood is a unique and wondrous time in human development.

I understand how difficult it can be for parents to balance all their commitments and responsibilities. For this reason, I have created a program that will enrich your child’s development while putting your mind at ease. I hire staff members who are experienced, dedicated and loving. Together we provide a loving play-based educational home environment atmosphere. I take pride in A Tree of Life children, my family childcare home/facility, and in all the great families who have entrusted me to care for and educate their children for over a decade.

I am a married mother of three wonderful boys. In my free time, I love being with my family, reading, exercising, exploring nature, traveling, cooking, relaxing and caring for my plants and animals.

Sylvia Halk

Lead Co-Teacher

Sylvia Halk brings years of experience working with children to our program. Before becoming a preschool teacher, and while raising her own two children, she owned and operated a children’s dance program. After her children were grown, she went back to school following her interest in early childhood education and received her Associate of Science degree in Early Childhood Education. Her love of working with children led her to continue her education earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Human Development.

Sylvia is also a strong advocate for outdoor nature play where children are free to express themselves through play, art, music, dance and more. Sylvia is sensitive in following the children's interest. She helps collaborate with the staff in providing material for emergent curriculum which results in a fun, exciting and challenging environment

When not working Sylvia enjoys spending time with her family especially her three young grandchildren. Some of her other interests are cooking, hiking, camping, kayaking and she is currently learning how to play guitar.

Isabelle Gunnels

Assistant Teacher

Isabelle graduated high school in 2016 and is currently pursuing two degrees at American River College, in Early Childhood Education and Psychology. Isabelle’s love for young children was nourished by her mother, who once owned her own childcare center, helped raise many children, and currently works at an elementary school where Isabelle tutors. Isabelle was drawn to a career with children because of their incredible minds and sense of wonder. Isabelle believes that children are natural scientists and thrive when they are given the opportunity to explore, question, and experiment. Isabelle has helped care for many children with her mother’s reference. Isabelle also volunteers to coach children's soccer teams. In Isabelle’s free time, she enjoys traveling, hiking with her dogs, reading, or staying in to watch movies in bed.

Danielle Garcia

Early Childhood Educator

Substitute

 Teacher

Danielle Garcia, graduated from high school in 2012 and is currently pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. Danielle grew up in a large family surrounded by many children. This experience has taught her how to care for and interact with small children. Danielle’s temperament and demeanor with children is loving, authentic, and kind.

Danielle is drawn to early childhood education because of the wonder and innocence of the young child. Danielle knew she wanted to work in this field very early on, and was privileged to be a volunteer at a family friend’s childcare for over two years. Danielle has been employed within after school programs. She has worked closely with children who benefited from her support with various subjects in school. In this position, she provided a safe and comfortable space for students to share their struggles and achievements with one another.

In Danielle's free time, she enjoys spending quality time with family and close friends, trying new foods, listening to music, reading, making new memories. She also enjoys the solitude of spending time alone. She uses this time to reflect on experiences and to learn more about herself.

Peggy Crawford

Early Childhood Educator Infant/Toddler Teacher

Substitute Teacher

Peggy Crawford received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education from Sacramento State University. She also completed additional courses in Administration at UC Davis.

Peggy worked as an Executive Secretary & Civil Rights Analyst for Caltrans for 30 years before retiring. While employed there, she counts volunteering her time to help create Caltrans’ first childcare facility (the DOT TOT Center) for State employees in downtown Sacramento as one of her greatest achievements. Peggy also helped write & lobby the legislature for a bill that would provide child care facilities in new State building's design plans. Several of these centers continue to provide government employees with affordable, quality, on-site children's centers today.

Peggy is the happy mother of 2 grown children, and has 4 beloved grandchildren. She is the eldest sister of 12 children, and helped raise her 11 siblings, which created the foundation for her love of children.

Ms. Peggy has been with A Tree of Life since September 2010 and is available as a long term substitute teacher.

She encourages individual development in art, music, dancing, play, & group projects. She is active, energetic, nurturing, and personable with the children. It is our privilege to have Peggy as part of our successful team!
